I have a Pirate’s Tale to share today.

Screen Shot 2013-07-31 at 4.46.38 PM

The Gulf coast of Alabama and the panhandle of Florida are full of bays and inland waters that were havens for pirates many years ago. Legend has it that they sought shelter in a secluded cove tucked deep into Perdido Bay, Florida

Perdido means lost in Spanish.  This is “Pirates Cove,” it is tucked into the sleepy little hamlet of Josephine, on the waters of Perdido Bay. source

This is how the cove looks today, a narrow channel sneaks past a sandy penninsula that guards a hidden shelter for the sailboats.  source

DANGER AHEAD!

If you want to try to distract the pirates while you search for their gold,

skull sandwiches are easy to make.  Use some thin sliced bread and cut a diagonal and then a straight line starting from a point about 2/3 up from the bottom on each side. You can cut more than one slice at a time, just stack the bread slices

DSC_0638

Then trim the bottom, and make slits to form teeth

DSC_0640

Leave the bottom slices without eye holes so the “blood” will show through

Spread the bottom slices with red strawberry or raspberry jam and the top slices with peanut butter.

Now you have a skull sandwich any pirate would love!
